Chapter 17
Mona
Mona woke up the next morning gasping for air. She flipped around, keeping her eyes on the ceiling, staring widely up at it.
It must have been because I slept on my back. Mona thought. She hadnât had a nightmare in ages from the last of what she remembered. Perhaps Amon was only her subconscious. Too bad it was a doubtful, low self esteem subconscious.
She felt her palm to her chest, feeling her heart rate settle down. As soon as it began to calm, she pushed herself up off the bed.
It was another Elsher day, unfortunately and she knew she just needed to visit him in order not to feel guilty about last night with Thatcher. Technically, she hadnât done anything wrong yet. Only now she feared something bad would happen. She was starting to care about Thatcher and didnât want to stop. It was an itch at that point, and seeing him was what satisfied it.
It was a dreadful morning, redundant of the other mornings she had spent getting ready to visit them. Not a smile cracked on her face when she slipped on a fitted sundress and walkable sandals. She brushed her teeth and didnât bother hurrying to do so, because it didnât matter to her to make it there on any kind of deadline.
Mona made it out the door within an hour of waking up, but decided beforehand on taking the long way through the town.
As Mona walked past apartment b, she sighed. But she knew she had to keep walking.
The weather was rather pleasant this morning, lightening up her mood from the nightmare. The town was filled with people who were joyful, strolling around. It was one of the better days, one that she was lucky to find the public in such a state.
Her soft hair blew in front of her face once she stepped foot onto the brick path, saddening her to a degree because it reminded her of her and Thatcherâs first encounter.
That thought slowly faded when the ton cleared out. There werenât as many people where she had walked through. Perhaps the market side was more lively, filled with old folks and their spouses arm in arm.
Mona sighed as she could see she was approaching the Elsherâs residence. At least, she could see it from where she was. That was about the time her nerves were at their worst.
Mona dreaded it, but she knew she just had to suck it up after leaving early, yet again, for the dinner they shared with the Bowmans.
She let her chest sink in and her posture sulk as she walked, underwhelmed about everything now.
âHelp!â a man yelled.
Mona startled, then looked over to the man who had just yelled. He was an elderly man in suspenders and a sweater vest with thin glasses at his nose.
Mona squinted her eyes at him, wondering what he was yelling about.
âHelp, darling,â he ran over to Mona who seemed to have been the only one near who noticed him. He tugged on her arm.
